update
Waubun  High School Close Up received a $10,000 donation from Shapokee Mdewakanton Sioux Community to help fund their Washington D.C trip.  Twenty students in grades 9-12 have made the commitment to raise funds to attend the DC trip at the end of April.  Each student has to raise $1977 to attend this 5 day trip.  The money pays for all travel, hotel, meals and more during their trip.  Students have been busy these last two years raising money by working concessions, selling pizzas and candy bars and they are currently selling raffle tickets to take in their final funds needed.  It is through generous donations such as this one that makes the fundraising a little easier on the students and their families.  The Mdewakanton Sioux Community expressed happiness to donate this money to share in their fundamental Dakota culture to improve the lives of others across the country.  If anyone would like to donate or purchase a raffle ticket please call Dejah Anderson at 218-473-6144.

Sitting down to share a bite to eat has HUGE benefits for both students and their families! It can reduce obesity, help your student perform better at school, and lower the risk of depression. The type of meal shared doesn't matter, just that time is spent together, sharing food and conversation. We hope you took some time over the holiday break to talk with your student. The "Family Time" gift tins, sent home with the oldest student of families in grades 6-12, should have helped get the conversations started. Happy New Year, from your 6-12 Family Literacy Team
