4th Graders’ Adventure at Little Elbow Lake Tribal Camp with Waubun School Forest
On Friday, September 20th, our 4th graders had the unique opportunity to participate in the 2024 Manoomini-Gabeshiwin at Little Elbow Lake Tribal Camp with The Waubun School Forest Program. This event was hosted by White Earth Tribal and Community College’s Community Extension program, and it offered students an immersive experience of the rich traditions of the area.
Here are some highlights from the day:
• Hands-On Ricing: Students learned about the traditional art of gathering, drying, and processing wild rice (manoomin). They actively participated in parching, jigging, and winnowing, getting hands-on experience in this meaningful cultural practice. Each student also had the chance to try popped rice dipped in maple syrup, which was a huge hit!
• Bird Feeder Making: At one of the stations, students created bird feeders, promoting a connection to wildlife and the natural world around them.
• Nettle Teachings: Students explored the many uses of nettle plants, including how they are used in traditional medicine and daily life. They even helped prepare a dip made with stinging nettle and got to taste it!
• Traditional Game: The day ended on a high note with a fun and engaging round of Lacrosse, a traditional game that connected the students to history while keeping them active.
A huge kudos to our 4th graders for representing the WOWE School by showing their thunderbird pride. They earned many compliments throughout the day!
