Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Schools

March 15, 2020 Dear Families, Today, Governor Tim Walz and Education Commissioner Mary Cathryn Ricker announced that all Minnesota public schools will close to students starting Wednesday, March 18, 2020 with the plan to resume instruction on Monday, March 30, 2020. During the school closure for students, Waubun-Ogema-White Earth Community Schools will be joining school districts and charter schools across the state to create plans to equitably distribute distance learning to our students should we need to close schools statewide for a longer period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minnesota Department of Education is defining distance learning to mean that a student receives daily interaction with their licensed teacher(s) and appropriate educational materials. Starting March 30, 2020, per the instruction from the Minnesota Department of Education, student learning will continue for the rest of the school year. Our educators will be giving thoughtful planning to our distance learning plan, offering careful consideration for students in a variety of areas, including students receiving special education services, multilingual learners, students experiencing homelessness, and students who rely on meals served at school. Once our distance learning plan is finalized we will communicate the plan to families through our Apptegy communication system and mail. As always, our first priority is the safety and well-being of our students. We also want to ensure every child has access to the education they need and deserve. Due to guidelines set forth by the CDC and the Minnesota Department of Health in response to the COVID 19 health issue, we are postponing our afterschool events and activities where large groups would be meeting. Consequently, next week's band/choir concert and speech night will be postponed. The Minnesota State High School League has also released an announcement stating that all sports and activities are limited to practice and tryouts until April 6, 2020.

We sent out this very important health information regarding COVID-19 yesterday, but not everyone was able to access it. So we will try again in a different format. There was a lock-down late this morning at 11:51 at the Waubun site due to a student medical emergency. Classes and lunch have resumed and the school day will continue as normal. Thank you to the staff and emergency personnel for their help and quick response. I also want to thank the students and staff for their cooperation and patience during the lock-down. Miss Allen is so proud of these smart little number writers! They all earned giant lollipops for exceeding the state standard of number writing (1-31) by writing 1-100, not once, but THREE times! The rest of their classmates are not far behind and will earn theirs next week. Congratulations Dorthea, Alexis, Taryn, Hannah, Aleecia, Landon, and Tavion! Way to be high achievers!

Fan Bus for tonight: $15 per person (this does not include admission cost)- parent/guardian must accompany for anyone under 9th grade. Bus leaves Waubun @ 4:20 and Mahnomen @4:00pm. MUST BE SIGNED UP AND PAID BY NOON TODAY- pay in the guidance office

School and buses will be dismissed early tomorrow, Monday, March 9, so students , families, and staff who wish to attend the boys’ basketball game will have time to travel to attend the game to support our team. School will be dismissed at 2:40 at Waubun and early buses at Ogema will release for early bus at 2:20, late bus at Ogema will pick up at 2:50. There will be no Get busy or Climber Club programs and no late bus. SACC will be offered , but parents will need to be sure to pick up children before 5:30. It is spirit day tomorrow for all students, staff, and fans so please wear your Thunderbird gear. Go Thunderbirds!
