Dear students, staff, parents, and community members,
As you are aware we have had an increase of COVID cases and spread in our counties, reservation and school communities. Our number one concern is the safety of our students and keeping students in school. Our biggest challenge has been working through the large number of students that have been identified as first contacts through the rules of contact tracing. The other is that this strain of COVID seems to be much quicker to spread. During the week of September 13-17 (count taken at 2:15 pm). We had 26 positive student cases, 2 positive staff cases, 197 first contact cases, and 2 staff first contacts.
The School Board voted to implement a mask requirement to make a reduction in the number of students missing because they were identified as first contacts due to the rules around contact tracing. When people are properly wearing face coverings (over nose and mouth), the person who becomes the first contact does not have to quarantine unless they have symptoms. This will dramatically cut down the number of our “first contacts” missing school. Our primary goal is to keep learners in school. Of course, we will monitor for symptoms because safety is also a major concern. We will begin this on Monday, September 20, 2021. Students and staff on current quarantine still need to complete their quarantine as their exposure was prior to masking.
Wearing a mask, gator, face shield will increase student attendance and student engagement by:
Reducing the first contacts needing to quarantine
Helping to reduce the spread of all kinds of viruses, germs, colds and cases of flu
Helping our student-athletes avoid quarantines and stay eligible for their activities
Please know that we will work through this and get back to our next new normal as soon as possible. Data will be reviewed weekly and shared with the school board to be reviewed every two weeks. The need for this requirement will be reviewed at regular board meetings.
