DNR invites conversation about deer at open house in Waubun
Public can meet local wildlife staff and learn about proposed season changes
Anyone interested in deer can talk with area wildlife managers from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday, Mar.26, 6-8 p.m., at the Waubun School Library, 1013 3rd Street.
This local, open-house-style meeting is a way to encourage discussions about deer and deer management, enhance local relationships and foster two-way communication between the DNR and the public. The DNR began the meetings last year with the release of its statewide deer management plan.
In addition to discussing general concerns about deer, individuals can ask DNR staff about last year’s harvest data, share observations, discuss potential season changes and get a preview of the Chronic Wasting Disease Response Plan that has been updated since the 2010 edition and will be formally released in April. Season changes include a proposed statewide youth deer hunting season.
No formal presentations have been planned; people can arrive any time during the scheduled meeting time.
The DNR will provide further online feedback opportunities for the public, with surveys that will cover chronic wasting disease management alternatives, perception of local deer populations, and potential hunting season changes for deer and other species. The survey addressing CWD will be available online at mndnr.gov/deerplan in late March. Online feedback opportunities concerning deer perceptions and season changes will be available in early April.
The DNR encourages anyone who can’t attend the meeting to contact Rob Baden, Detroit Lakes area wildlife supervisor, robert.baden@state.mn.us, 218-846-8476, for additional information or to address any questions about deer management.
More about the Minnesota deer management plan
The DNR released the Minnesota White-Tailed Deer Management Plan in July 2018, setting new goals and priorities, increasing formal opportunities for citizens to influence deer decisions, and aiming for a disease-free deer population. The plan was a result of two years of planning that involved statewide meetings and hundreds of in-depth conversations with citizens and stakeholders. The full plan is available on the DNR website at mndnr.gov/deerplan.

Congratulations to Mackenzie Lampton for receiving the KRJM/KRJB good student award.

As we learn and grow, the expectations, responsibilities and competition facing us tend to compound ... And when all of those challenges pile up, they can make us feel smaller in comparison. If that happens, let the wisdom that you are enough overtake your perceived shortcomings. Each time you feel self-criticism coming on, give yourself a compliment instead. Today, remind yourself that you stack up. Then, remind someone else that they stack up too.

Hello family, friends, and members of the community!
The Department of American Indian Studies is happy to announce another year of our American Indian Summer Institute (AISI) that aims to get indigenous students acquainted with University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus, facilities, students, faculty, and staff. We want to foster an early sense of ease and familiarity on college campuses that will make the transition into higher education that much easier for students.
Students will stay in a residential hall on U of M campus and spend 6 days attending classes and workshops on college prep, admissions, financial aid, professional development, ACT prep, cultural knowledge, and various academic areas. The ultimate goal for this program is to help prepare our students for college, offer them a chance to meet other youth from around the state, and build their academic confidence.
If you or someone you know has a student that fits the requirements, please forward the application as we would love to host them in our second year of the AISI program.
All communications should be sent to aisi@umn.edu
Where: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus, East Bank - Minneapolis, MN
When: Tentatively TBD: Sunday, July 28, 2019 - Saturday, August 03, 2019 &/or Sunday, August 04, 2019 - Saturday, August 10, 2019.
