The Seven Teachings, also known as Seven Grandfather Teachings, are a set of principles we conduct towards other people. These seven teachings encompass virtue among the Anishinaabe or Ojibwe culture and are similar in nations and reservations across the United States. We propose to nominate and honor students in Waubun School who demonstrate one of the Grandfather teachings in their home, school, or community.
Congratulations to our May winners: May is Humility.
Be humble you walk with yourself to the way you walk with someone.
Humble yourself to your fellow human in the way you walk with him or her.
Dabaadendiziwin—Humility: Humility is to know yourself as a sacred part of Creation. In the Anishinaabe language, this word can also mean “compassion.” You are equal to others, but you are not better. Some communities instead express this with Bekaadiziwin, which in addition to “humility” can also be translated as “calmness,” “meekness,” “gentility” or “patience.”
