Over the past two seasons, the Mahnomen-Waubun Thunderbirds have bested the Polk County West Thunder in all three of their matchups. The Thunderbirds welcomed the Thunder to its home opener on Friday, Sept. 8 coming off a commanding 37-0 victory at Benson Week 1.

The Thunderbirds gave up their first touchdown of the season but demolished the Thunder 42-8 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Mahnomen-Waubun has outscored opponents 79-8 in that time span.

Mahnomen-Waubun’s Tanner Stech opened up the scoring with an 84-yard kickoff return to give the Thunderbirds a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Mahnomen-Waubun tacked on two more scores before Polk County West found the endzone to close out the second quarter. The Thunderbirds took a 21-8 lead into the half.

Mahnomen-Waubun continued to pour it on in the second half scoring 21 unanswered points including a punt return by Stech in the fourth quarter. The Thunderbirds put up a crooked number in all four quarters to grab its first section victory of the season.

Easton Bevins led the Thunderbirds in rushing with 99 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Mahnomen-Waubun racked up 282 of its 320 total yards on the ground. Quarterback Blake McMullen ended the night 4-9 with 38 yards and two interceptions. Carter Clark finished with a team-high 14 receiving yards on one reception. McMullen found four different receivers for his four completions.

On the defensive side, Brody Lhotka and Mike Weaver ended the game with a team-high three tackles each. Lex McDougall, Jacob Littlewolf, and Colton Stock each recorded a sack. Mahnomen-Waubun held the Polk County West to 95 total yards including -2 rushing yards.

The Thunderbirds are back on the field in a Section 8A matchup against Ada-Borup-West (2-0).
